These Floridians Found A Dead Bat In Their Pre-Packaged Salad Mix

3 min read

Two diners in Florida were eating a packed salad, then while enjoying the crunchy lettuce, they stumbled upon a really odd ingredient. At first, they thought it was crouton, but to their shock, it was a bat. A dead bat!

Fresh Express recently recalled some salad mixes sold at Walmart stores after some customers reported to have found a winged creature plopping in their healthy leafy greens.

The Guardian says in a report that the bat was then sent to a CDC rabies lab, but could not be given a definitive test due to its already “decayed state.” As a precaution, the pair has been recommended for treatment, despite it being “extremely uncommon” for someone to contract rabies from eating an already dead animal.

“Both people report being in good health and neither has any signs of rabies,” the CDC said in a statement.

USA Today reports that the salad in question is the “Organic Marketside Spring Mix” by Fresh Express. The company has since issued a recall for lot G089B19 with a “best by” date of April 14 and has stated that this batch was shipped to Walmart stores in the southeastern United States. As of posting time, no one else has reported finding bat remains in their salad bags.

“The recall was necessitated when Fresh Express was notified that extraneous animal matter was allegedly found in a single container of the salad,” the company said in a statement. “Out of an abundance of caution, all salads manufactured in the same production run are being recalled.”

“Fresh Express takes matters of food safety very seriously and rigorously complies with all food safety regulations including the prescribed Good Agricultural Practices,” they said. 🌈
